Karagouna of Thessali.
.
A Karagoúna is a female of the Karagoúni (Karagoúnis, Karagoúnides) people – a distinctive group of Greeks. Their dialect is distinctive, their history is long, and their location is particular. They are often confused with other Greek nomadic pastoralists (sheep and goat herders), the Koutsovlachs, Arvanitovlachi, and Sarakatsans, who occupy overlapping, though larger, territory.

DASKALOGIANNIS
Born in the village of Anopolis in the Cretan region of Sfakia, Ioannis Vlachos (Daskalogiannis) was an important revolutionary figure during the Ottoman occupation of Crete.
Daskalogiannis was a wealthy ship owner who, as early as 1750, was recognised as the town clerk and chairman of Sfakia.
In 1770 Daskalogiannis was contacted by Russian emissaries who hoped to instigate a revolt amongst the Greeks of the Ottoman Empire. Daskalogiannis agreed to fund and organise a rebellion and started planning a revolutionary liberation movement with 1300 Sfakiots and by the spring of 1770 preparations were complete for a revolution in Sfakia. Men, rifles, and supplies were gathered, and defences had been built at strategic locations.
The Russian fleet, commanded by Count Orlov, did not sail to Crete to assist the Sfakiot rebels and, as a result, they were left to rely on their own resources.
On March 25, 1770 with the revolutionary flag raised at the church of Agios Georgios of Anopolis. The uprising failed to spread to the lowlands and without Russian intervention the uprising was brutally put down by superior Turkish forces. For the first time, Sfakia was fully dominated by Turkish forces.
Daskalogiannis surrendered with 70 men at Frangokastello near Hora Sfakion.
On the orders of the Pasha of Heraklion, Daskalogiannis was tortured outside Heraklion’s Fortezza. He was flayed with razors and executed on June 17, 1771. A proud Sfakianos, he suffered through torture in silence and with fortitude even when brought in front of his brother who allegedly was driven insane by the sight of his brother’s execution.
During these cooler months our Moussaka becomes front + centre. This beautiful warm dish of baked layers of potatoes, minced beef + eggplant topped with bechamel cream sauce has your name on it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Storyville

Once upon a time there was a cocktail bar and nightclub in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD called ‘StoryVille’… Styled around childhood fables that we know and love, this fairy tale themed venue offers a truly unique and whimsical experience for those who dare to roam throughout its rooms.

During the week, the Mushroom Palace Cocktail bar, with glowing toadstools sprouting from the walls and chilled out atmosphere, makes an ideal drop in for after work drinks. Take the edge off with one of our signature cocktails, or simply relax with an ice cold beer or glass of Pinot Gris.

On weekends the StoryVille team keep the party going ‘til late with two floors of music and entertainment. From the moment you step through the door into this noir fantasy you’ll discover a world of nostalgia and wonder, where anything is possible.

Climb the Enchanted Tree to the Mushroom Palace and Birdcage or travel onwards to the fantasy world of Tolkein in the Hobbit House Bar, Narnia and The Library ~ complete with a wall of giant books.

Music is supplied by some of Melbourne’s well established DJs plus interstate guests, who spin tunes from an ink pot-shaped station. The dance floor fills to a range of sounds such as soulful vocal/funky house~ climbing to deep & tech house through to the wee, small hours.

In the end, the quote over the door sums it up best: “Buy the ticket, take the ride…” (Hunter S Thompson).

So, come one, come all to the fairy tale that is StoryVille.

U3A

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international organisation embodying the principles of lifelong education and the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, in an atmosphere of mutual learning and teaching. Each U3A is a learning community, organised by and for people who can best be described as being active in retirement – the so-called “third age” of their lives.

The term “university” is used in the original and medieval sense of an association or community of teachers and scholars, united in the pursuit of knowledge. “Third age” refers to the life period of active retirement, which follows the first age of childhood and formal education and the second age of working life, and which precedes the fourth age of dependence.
